LUCID VISIONS
October 16 - November 24, 2014

Often when one is asleep, there is something in consciousness which declares that what then presents itself is but a dream.  – Aristotle, “On Dreams”

The territory between wakefulness and the dream-state is one widely traversed by artists.  Curators Diana Corvelle, Cara DeAngelis and Tun Myaing have collected the works of twenty-three New York Academy of Art alumni whose works challenge, unhinge and altogether shift perception of what should be called a “real” experience.

Lucid dreaming, a phenomenon in which an individual is aware of their own dream state enough to attempt control within it, is a cannily apt comparison to the creation of art.  Possessing the ability to give form to fleeting memories and semi-lucid moments, these artists call into question the very perception of reality at will and offer up alternatives of their own.

Bringing together local and international artists based in Brooklyn, Jersey City, and Manhattan these selected works speak to the endless possible deviations from reality as envisioned by an unfettered mind. The playfulness and confidence of these works show how completely at home the artists are in their alternate reality.

Gallery hours October 16th 6-9pm, October 18th & 19th 12pm-6pm and by appointment.

Panepinto Galleries was founded by Stefania Panepinto in 2011 as a collective space to host gallery exhibitions, film screenings, theatrical performances, and photo shoots, as well as build a community of artists. Located in the heart of the Powerhouse Arts District in Jersey City, the 3500SF warehouse and 5,000SF artists studios include 14' ceilings, elevator, a loading dock, and convenient access for private and public transportation.

Our gallery will be open for guests to view our newest exhibition entitled A≠A, featuring the work of Glenn Garver, Doreen McCarthy and Carolyn Salas.

Details about the JC Studio Tour:
The Jersey City Artists Studio Tour is Presented and Sponsored by Mayor Steve Fulop of Jersey City, The Jersey City Municipal Council, Division of Cultural Affairs, and Pro Arts Jersey City.

The Jersey City Artists Studio Tour is in its twenty-third year, and is one of the most anticipated cultural events in Jersey City. Hundreds of local artists participate in the Jersey City Artists Studio Tour, showcasing their work in mediums that span from visual artwork to performance pieces. Jersey City artists utilize the Studio Tour to introduce their body of work to the community, as thousands of visitors will tour private studios, community spaces, galleries, businesses and pop-up shops in support of the arts.

The Studio Tour creates collaborative opportunities for area businesses, arts organizations, and galleries to partner with artists in presenting their work to the public. Visitors are introduced to their local arts community in a supportive environment that encourages dialogue and interaction.

We have created a series of new instructed art programs at Panepinto Galleries designed to serve the needs of a range of artistic abilities - from the beginner, to the more seasoned artist. Our affordable art classes are taught by skilled and accomplished instructors in a comfortable and supportive environment.

In October 2012, we will be offering instructional classes in Figure Drawing, Oil Painting, and Photography.

We allow students to "drop-in" on classes and pay as you go at $38 per class, OR you can sign up now for the full six-week session at $190 & receive a DISCOUNT OF ONE FREE CLASS!

Here are our Fall offerings (you will receive an invite with further detail about what you will be learning each week upon joining the group):

  • DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS (Mondays 7-9pm, Oct. 15-Nov. 19) Learn to use your digital SLR camera. Further detail forthcoming in the individual invite.
  • INSTRUCTIONAL FIGURE DRAWING (Tuesdays 7-10pm, Oct. 16-Nov. 20) In this course we will explore figure drawing, incorporating the study of basic anatomy. Gaining an understanding of the muscular structure of the human figure greatly enhances the depth and reality of figurative work. We will focus on important muscles, discussing works by artists that illustrate an understanding of anatomy. Our instructor, Marshall Jones, is an accomplished artist and teacher. He currently teaches at the Art Students League of New York and the Salmagundi Club in New York.
  • INSTRUCTIONAL OIL PAINTING CLASS (Wednesdays 7-10pm, Oct. 17-Nov. 21) Working in oils, students will be given the option to paint from a still life or their own subjects (i.e. photos or personal objects). Students will be encouraged to go at their own pace. The initial focus will be on the drawing phase with an emphasis on composition and concept. From there, students will progress to basic color theory and value organization. This course is open to all levels. Our instructor, Liz Adams-Jones, teaches at Urban Arts at Monroe in Hoboken and the Art Center of New York.

We: will provide the instruction, music, and inspiration. Our venue features 3,500 square feet of renovated warehouse space with 14' ceilings.

You: order in some food and bring your favorite bottle of wine, your materials or an easel, should you desire to use one. Let the demands of your work day fade away as we indulge in the meditative art process.

Explore your creativity in the Powerhouse Arts District of Jersey City; all artists and aspiring creatives are encouraged to join.
