BENJAMIN KEATING began his work as an artist during his formative years as a poet. Since then he has become a master sculptor who works primarily in bronze. He also manufactures work for acclaimed artists including Julian Schnabel, Michele Oka Doner, Tom Otterness, and others. Keating works from his metal-casting facility, which specializes in mold-making, production, and custom patination. He has been commissioned by noteworthy artists as a sculptor and has exhibited throughout New York; in group shows at Paul Kasmin Gallery, in a Brooklyn Rail auction at Pace Gallery and alongside notable artists at the Mana Contemporary in Jersey City, NJ, where his metal-casting foundry is based since 2014. Keating has exhibited with Tripoli Gallery since 2015 and had a solo exhibition with the gallery earlier this year. His work can be found in prestigious collectors' and artists' homes such as Damien Hirst. Keating is based in Brooklyn and Jersey City and works as an adjunct professor of visual arts alongside distinguished artists such as Kiki Smith at Columbia University.
ABOUT THE WORK
For Canopy Hotel, Keating’s sculptures complement the historic industrial neighboring locale. Infusing language and form as method of expression, his sculptures are fabricated in either cast aluminum or bronze and are juxtaposed by Elaine Lorenz's ceramic sculptures for a contrasting effect. All of Keating’s sculptures are derived from poems written by the artist and the words are meant to be found, not read. "In Ben Keating's world, the sculpture is in constant locomotion.” said Phong Bui, Co-Founder and Artistic Director of The Brooklyn Rail. Titles include: Love Hate Human, How and Why, Minute, Nothing Precious, and Coexistence.
