Arc-Types and Well-Rounded Characters
Arc-Types and Well-Rounded Characters
Opening Reception: Friday, May 4th 6pm-9pm
May 4 - June 1, 2012
PANEPINTO GALLERIES presents “Arc-Types and Well-Rounded Characters” a group exhibition of artwork based on the circle and its component, the arc. This exhibition demonstrates the ways in which this simple formal element is interpreted by the participating artists. Using the circle as a unifying element, artists address a wide spectrum of subject matter including the mathematical, astronomical, environmental, architectural and spatial. Other artists use the circle as a visual representation of sound, personal experience or data mapping. Some of the included artists muse on the circle as pure form. Overall, the exhibition demonstrates how a simple shape can be charged with unlimited symbolic and artistic potential.
Featured artists include Gianluca Bianchino, Dianne Bowen, Magenta del Ray, Giovanna Cecchetti, Dahlia Elsayed, Vandana Jain, Ahni Kruger, Betty McGeehan, Ryan Roa, Lauren Smith, Travis LeRoy Southworth and Injoo Whang. The theme was developed by curator Jeanne Brasile as an investigation into a highly culturally charged symbol with seemingly inexhaustible implications. Each of the artists addresses a distinctive subject within the narrative of the circle.
