PANEPINTO GALLERIES presents the Shelter Series by MICHELLE DOLL
at the W Hotel Hoboken December 20 - January 7, 2016.
Humans seek various methods of protection from vulnerability – both through internal and external forces. Yet when our exterior defenses fall away, we are left only with the protection we have created inside ourselves. This series of paintings by Michelle Doll is about empowerment through our inner calm and sense of safety, and pulling together our inner resources when outer defenses fall away.
When venturing into the world, we form our own means of protection – physical, mental and emotional. Still, as inherently vulnerable beings, there is a limit to the barriers we can erect, so we pick and choose – and if we are lucky, we can find empowerment in our choices. Michelle recognizes vulnerability in both the content of the paintings and in the process of creating them: in her work, she paints the surface and then intentionally scrapes parts of it off or wipes it away, leaving an imprint of the past, but there is a lack of control and unexpected discoveries and mistakes can occur. In these paintings, Michelle allows these mistakes to show through. This way, in both her painting process and her imagery, she attempts to capture that transient state – a mental presence between the physical and metaphysical, the now between the past and future – a moment caught between.
Michelle Doll earned her BFA from Kent State University and MFA from New York Academy of Art where she graduated Cum Laude on both. Her work has been exhibited and featured worldwide at galleries in New York, St. Barth’s, San Francisco, Chicago, Basel, London and Olso. She is represented by Lyons Wier Gallery in New York City and Galleri Ramfjord in Oslo, Norway. Michelle currently lives and works in Hoboken, NJ.
