ABOUT THE WORK
“Constructed” is a result of the way he perceives shapes and planes in his subjects. These ideas connected with a portrait bring many questions of perception to both the artist and viewer. Beauty and representation in the figure are seen through his eyes as the painter. For this piece he worked with a live model to capture the essence of the portrait and how his pure perception of the shadows and light change through every plane direction. By intertwining strong brushstrokes, loaded with pigment, he tries to sculpt this figure with oil paint. Creating the figure to feel bold and powerful, this relationship exemplifies the concept of beauty within the incompleteness of a work. There is a balance on what we see and what we perceive while portraying an emotional aspect of the piece that completes image. The connection between his subject, what his mind processes, and the result of his mark making on the canvas is all an act of mere perception and discovery.
